Monroe County Historian, Ralph Bass has lived in Monroe County for many years and loves the history the county holds. In Bass’s own words, “It’s a very distinctive county for one, it has a very peculiar history. We think it’s important for us to look at the past, to reexamine it, to see in what ways our perspectives have changed, and what ways in which we need to change our perspectives.” In 2021, Bass chaired the Monroe County Bicentennial Commission, helping Monroe County celebrate it’s 200th birthday. During that time, Bass commissioned weekly snippets featuring Monroe County’s rich history, titled “Did you know”. For example, did you know the first known meteorite to fall in the State of Georgia actually occurred in Monroe County.
