Did you know that Georgians have not just recently recognized the problem of having counties and towns with the same name but in different parts of the state?

As early as 1823 the editor of the Georgia Journal in Milledgeville noted, “Great inconvenience has arisen in this state from counties and towns having the same names.  This has been particularly felt in Monroe and Walton counties.”  He had in mind Monroe County, founded in 1821, being confused with the town of Monroe, established in 1818, in Walton County.  The problem has only grown in Georgia since the establishment of Forsyth (town) in 1823 and Forsyth (county) in 1831.  Here there is a double dose of this problem with both the county and a city in it having names used elsewhere in the state.
