Did you know that Forsyth’s militia, the Quitman Guard, was sent to the Mexican border in 1916 after Francisco Villa and his men attacked civilians at Columbus, New Mexico?

The Monroe County soldiers stayed on the southern border for almost a year and when they were brought back to Georgia in 1917, they were not demobilized but held in readiness.  A few months later Congress declared war on Germany and the Monroe County men found themselves bound for Europe.
