Did you know that Monroe County once had as its newspaper, “The Bee?” “By Industry We Thrive” was its motto.

Published between 1848 and 1850, it was the legal organ for the county. When the Clerk of the Superior Court, Rufus J. Pinckard, sent legal ads to an out-of-county newspaper to run, the publisher of “The Bee” fatally shot the Clerk of the Superior Court. [He was indicted but the jury did not convict him.] “The Bee” ceased publication soon thereafter.

Apparently only one issue of “The Bee” has survived. It is at the University of Georgia in Athens, but it may be read on a computer screen in Monroe County by going to https://gahistoricnewspapers.galileo.usg.edu. Hint: while on the Galileo site, search for newspapers in Forsyth and sort by date published.
